Colored Thing 1 and Thing 2 printable bookmark with red yarn tassel

It’s 8 PM. You just remembered tomorrow is Dr. Seuss Day at school, and your kid needs something to bring. Don’t panic. These free printable Thing 1 and Thing 2 bookmarks take about 10 minutes – print, color, cut, done. You can even add a cute yarn tassel if you’re feeling ambitious.

The printable comes with three bookmarks on a single page, so you can cut them out and have enough for siblings, friends, or the whole class. They’re perfect for classrooms, Dr. Seuss Week parties, or just a quiet afternoon activity at home.

And if you want to make them extra special, I’ll show you how to add a simple yarn tassel. It takes about 5 minutes and makes the bookmarks look like something you’d actually buy at a bookstore.

What’s Included in the Free Printable

The free Thing 1 and Thing 2 bookmark PDF includes three bookmarks on one page, each one featuring Thing 1 and Thing 2 with “Reading is Fun!” text and a pre-marked hole for adding a tassel or ribbon.

All three are black and white, so kids can color them however they want. And since you get three per page, one print gives you enough for a couple of kids. Need more? Just print extra copies!

Supplies You’ll Need

Supplies for Thing 1 and Thing 2 printable bookmarks including template, scissors, hole punch, crayons, and red yarn
  • Free Thing 1 and Thing 2 bookmark printable (download below!)
  • White cardstock (regular paper works too, but cardstock holds up better)
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch (optional – only if you’re adding a tassel)
  • Red yarn (optional – for the tassel)
  • Small piece of cardboard, about 3″ x 2″ (optional – for making the tassel)

How to Make Thing 1 and Thing 2 Printable Bookmarks

Step 1: Print the Bookmarks

Download the free printable (link is below) and print it on white cardstock. Regular paper works well for coloring, but cardstock makes the bookmarks sturdier, especially if little hands will be using them every day.

One page includes three bookmarks. If you’re making these for a classroom or group, print as many copies as needed.

Step 2: Color the Bookmarks

This is the fun part! Hand the page over to your kids and let them color Thing 1 and Thing 2.

If your kids want to stay true to the book, Thing 1 and Thing 2 have blue hair and red jumpsuits. But honestly? There are no rules here.

Crayons work best for a classic look. Markers give bolder color but can bleed through regular paper (another reason to use cardstock!).

Step 3: Cut Out the Bookmarks

Use scissors to cut along the black outlines of each bookmark. Younger kids can practice their scissor skills here. The shapes are simple rectangles with rounded corners, so they’re easy to follow.

Step 4: Punch a Hole (Optional)

If you want to add a tassel or ribbon, use a hole punch to make a hole where the circle is marked at the top of each bookmark.

Step 5: Add a Yarn Tassel (Optional)

This step is optional, but it makes the bookmarks look so cute. Here’s how to make a simple yarn tassel:

1. Lay a piece of yarn across a small piece of cardboard (about 3″ x 2″). This piece will be used to tie off the tassel later, so leave the ends long.

2. Wrap yarn around the cardboard about 40-50 times. The more you wrap, the fuller your tassel will be.

3. Carefully slide the yarn bundle off the cardboard. Use the piece of yarn you laid across the top to tie the bundle tightly at one end.

4. Tie another piece of yarn about an inch below the top to create the tassel’s “head.” This gives it that rounded shape at the top.

5. Cut the loops at the bottom and trim the ends evenly. And just like that, you’ve got a tassel!

Thread the long yarn ends from the top of the tassel through the hole in your bookmark and tie them in a knot or bow. Done!

Tips for the Best Printable Bookmarks

  • Print on cardstock for bookmarks that last. Regular printer paper gets flimsy fast, especially with kids handling them every day.
  • Laminate before punching the hole if you have a laminator. This makes them practically indestructible. Punch the hole through the laminated bookmark.
  • Use a ribbon instead of yarn if you prefer. A thin satin ribbon in red or blue looks really polished.
  • Skip the tassel entirely if you’re making a bunch for a classroom. The bookmarks look great on their own! Teachers, you can print a class set in about two minutes.
  • Let the coloring be imperfect. Thing 1 and Thing 2 are chaotic little characters. A messy, colorful bookmark is totally on brand for them.
