Need a Dr. Seuss craft for your beloved Dr. Seuss books? Here are fun Thing 1 and Thing 2 bookmark crafts that will help keep your place in the book!

Thing 1 Thing 2 Dr. Seuss Bookmarks

My kids have recently discovered Dr. Seuss books, and we are obsessed. It’s really hard to pick a favorite, and my kids will tell you that they love them all.

It’s hard to argue though that one of the best Dr. Seuss books is The Cat in the Hat. My kids especially love Thing One and Thing Two! The Things are such lively characters with their red jumpsuits and blue afro hair. They are just like little kids who just want to be silly and run around and have fun.

These Thing 1 and Thing 2 Dr. Seuss bookmarks are great companions to your The Cat in the Hat book. They’re perfect for Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd, Read Across America Day, or really anytime your kids want a fun craft to go with their favorite book.

I’ve included free printable patterns to make these bookmarks super easy for you and your kids to make. You can choose to make just one or make both to use on all your books by Dr. Seuss.

Plus, this craft sneaks in some great practice with tracing, cutting, and gluing — all important fine motor skills for preschoolers and kindergartners. Don’t worry if things aren’t perfect. The Things are messy characters anyway!

These Thing 1 and Thing 2 bookmarks are perfect if you have multiple kids who are reading Dr. Seuss books. One kid can use the Thing 1 bookmark and the other can use the Thing 2 bookmark. And if you have more than one kid, you can always make Thing 3 or Thing 4 bookmarks!

Tips for Making Your Thing 1 and Thing 2 Bookmarks

Here are a few things we learned while making ours:

  • Use cardstock instead of construction paper if you want bookmarks that last longer. Construction paper works fine for the craft itself, but cardstock holds up way better with daily use.
  • Laminate them! If you have a laminator at home, run the finished bookmarks through it. They’ll survive way more book-reading sessions.
  • Don’t glue the hands all the way down. Leave the bottom half of the arms and hands free so you can slide a book page under them. That’s how the bookmark holds your place!
  • Let younger kids draw the face their own way. It doesn’t have to match the book exactly. Some of our best-looking Things have had very creative expressions.
  • Turn them into puppets. Glue a craft stick to the back and you’ve got a Thing 1 or Thing 2 puppet for acting out scenes from The Cat in the Hat!
