History Behind Father’s Day

Similar to Mother’s Day, the significance behind Father’s Day is to honor fathers or dads. Celebrated on the third Sunday in June, the credit for the origins of Father’s Day is often given to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington.

Sonora’s father was a Civil War veteran who raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. She is said to have had the idea for Father’s Day in 1909 while listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, which was becoming established as a holiday at the time.

Her idea was supported by local religious leaders, thus the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, the birth month of Sonora’s father. In 1972, Father’s Day became a national holiday when President Richard Nixon legislated the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.

Today, Father’s Day is celebrated widely around the world. However, it is celebrated on different dates in various countries, such as Australia, which celebrates Father’s Day on the third Sunday of September, and Iceland, which celebrates it in November.
