Do you think bats are cute?

I find that people either think they are adorable little rodents with wings, or they are terrified of the furry, flying creature. I am in between – they are cute from afar, but I wouldn’t want to hold one in my hands.

Whether you think real bats are cute or not, the one we are making today is. Check out the flying paper tube bat Halloween craft that will make your kids scream … with delight!

Make Flying Paper Tube Bats

Materials:

Instructions:

  1. If you are using a paper towel roll, cut the paper tube into 1/2 or 1/3. If you are using a toilet paper roll, you can use it as is.
  2. Cut out a strip of construction paper that will cover the entire paper tube. You pick the color!
  3. Glue or tape the construction paper to the paper tube.
  4. Glue the googly eyes onto the covered paper tube.

  1. Press on the top of the paper tube and fold it to form the ears. You should get an arched shape (see picture below).

  1. Repeat the same on the bottom of the paper tube to form the legs.
  2. Draw and cut out wings on the construction paper. I folded the construction paper a half before I cut so that I can get two identical wings.

  1. Use a hole puncher, make a hole in the middle of the paper tube, on the opposite side of the googly eyes. If you don’t have a hole puncher, you can just use scissors or a knife to make a small hole.
  2. Thread the string through the hole.
  3. Tie the paper clip to the string on the end that is inside the paper tube.

  1. Pull the other end of the string (without the paper clip) to make the bat fly.

  1. (optional) Glue the wings of the bat back so that it looks like it’s zooming through the air!
  2. (optional) Cut out two little triangles and glue them underneath the googly eyes to give the bat fangs. I didn’t do this because I thought the bat was cuter without its fangs.

How adorable is this little bat? My kids like to run around the house with the bat, trying to make it fly like a kite. After they are done, I hang it up on the trees for Halloween decoration.

Interesting Facts about Bats

Nobody really talks about bats until Halloween is around the corner. So use this opportunity to teach your kids about bats!

Here are some interesting facts (source):

  • Bats are nocturnal (they sleep at night).
  • Bats are mammals, not birds.
  • While bats do have good eyesight, they “see” in the dark by echolocation. Bats emit noises and wait for the echo to bounce back from nearby objects. They use the sound waves to identify the objects and their locations.
  • Depending on the species, bats eat fruits, insects, or even blood!

  1. All I can say is WOW! Thank you for such a cute, fun, and most importantly FAST toddler activity. My 28mo was engaged and enjoyed the quick project that turned out so adorable! We didn’t have paper clips but we’re just going to hang them upside down from a tree in our front yard or a hook on the overhang of our front porch. I never buy seasonal decor (or cards). Homemade is way cheaper, cuter, and much more personalized and memorable. Thanks again, and hello from Northern Illinois where the leaves are just starting to pop with fall colors!

    1. Aw I am so glad you and your toddler had so much fun! And hanging the bats from the trees is a great idea. I agree with you that DIY seasonal decors are the best!
