Letting the kids stay up past their bedtime on New Year’s Eve sounds like a fun idea… until they start throwing tantrums because they are tired and bored! Here is a fun New Year’s eve craft that will keep the kids happy while waiting for the countdown.

Using items you probably already have in your kitchen pantry, your kids can make a paper plate New Year’s noisemaker! They will be so excited to make something they can use in a few hours to celebrate the beginning of the new year.

Parenting tip: If your kids are young enough and can’t read time, consider turning the clock a few hours forward. This way, your kids can celebrate the clock hitting midnight and go to bed before any meltdowns!

Instructions:

Decorate the Paper Plates

Using markers and other craft items, decorate the backside of two paper plates. For example, you can write the specific year on one paper plate, and write “Happy New Year” on the other plate. One of the paper plate will be for the front of the noisemaker, and the other one for the back.

Decorate Paper Plates

Attach the Straw

Flip the paper plates so that the inside is facing up. Glue the paper straw or jumbo popsicle stick to the inside of one of the paper plates. If you are using a straw, press to flatten the portion that is at the edge of the paper plate. Make sure enough length of the straw is inside the paper plate for stability.

Add the Beans

Place a small amount of beans in the center of the plate. Be careful your child doesn’t pour too much on the plate, it’s actually noisier when the beans have more room to bounce off the plate and each other!

Insert the bean

Assemble the Noisemaker

Hot glue the two paper plates together by squeezing a thin line of hot glue around the outside ring of one plate. Carefully place the other paper plate on top and press down gently until set.

Add the Decorations

Decorate your paper plate noisemaker even more! Glue on sequins, use glitter glue, whatever you like! We curled a piece of ribbon using scissors and tied it to the straw.

Shake the Noisemaker

Your New Year’s noisemaker is ready to welcome the new year at midnight! Shake it, twirl it, do a little dance with it. Your kids will love how much noise it makes!

  1. Thank you so much Betty for this New Years craft! It was the perfect craft for my Daycare kids with it being 3 days before New Years and with it pouring rain all day! I had everything on hand except we had to use 7 inch plates which worked out just fine.
